Verified 2026-09-07: POST of an MCP initialize to https://mcp.tavily.com/mcp/ returned HTTP 401 with an empty body; the control POST to /zzz-not-a-route returned 404 "Not Found". Live first-party auth-gated server. The docs put the API key in the URL query string as the primary example; a key in a URL ends up in client logs and config files, which is worth saying before anyone pastes it on camera. The endpoint carries a trailing slash. 2026-09-07: https://mcp.tavily.com/mcp/ returned 401 to an MCP initialize POST (https://mcp.tavily.com/mcp/). 2026-09-09 (P6-04 repo sweep): first-party server source recorded at https://github.com/tavily-ai/tavily-mcp, 2,376 stars, not archived, last push 2026-09-03. Evidence that it is Tavily's own: the official MCP registry entry io.github.tavily-ai/tavily-mcp carries that repository URL, the npm package tavily-mcp declares the same repository, and the org tavily-ai lists tavily.com as its site.
